Markets and AI stocks: brief and sources

Checked 23 October 2026. The headline describes the 22 October sell-off, with a separate update on the next Asian session. These are fixed, dated figures, not live quotes or predictions.

Reuters’ closing report, updated 22 October at 8 p.m. on the publisher’s display, and the Barchart snapshot hosted by Raymond James: Nasdaq Composite 26,008.86, down 2.60%; S&P 500 7,663.43, down 1.21%; Dow 52,867.98, up 0.02%. The chart compares close-to-close price changes on the same −3% to +3% scale. Index levels and point changes are not used as bar lengths.

AP’s 22 October US index summary also records Russell 2000 up 0.1%. The S&P 500 fell even though some other indexes rose. S&P DJI’s methodology guide explains float-adjusted market-cap weighting. Its S&P 500 and Dow guide distinguishes the Dow’s price weighting. The blocks illustrate unequal influence; they do not depict measured constituent weights or index contributions.

Reuters’ closing report and the AP 22 October global report describe concerns about AI spending, financing and returns. Selected company moves: Meta about −7.0%; Nvidia −4.4%. These are rounded daily stock moves, not an AI-sector return or a measure of how much AI investment lost. We do not use conflicting descriptions of whether Meta’s earnings beat or missed expectations.

AP reports that Treasury yields fell that day. Persistent concerns about financing costs must not be confused with a claim that yields rose on 22 October. AP also reports Brent crude up 4.0% at $113.17 per barrel on 22 October, linked to war-related supply worries. No numerical attribution of the stock decline to oil or rates is calculated.

AP’s 23 October Asia update describes markets mostly rebounding after early losses while Japan still fell. It is not a synchronized global closing dataset. We do not splice those observations into the 22 October US comparison.
